Keats House

Keats House is close for remodeling until October 2008.

Keats House was the home of the famous Romantic poet John Keats, who lived from 1795-1821. Keats and his works to this day are still famous the world over.

Keats wrote some of his best-loved works while living at the Keats House between 1818 and 1820. He wrote his famous poem Ode to a Nightingale under a plum tree in the garden. He soon fell in love with his neighbor's daughter Fanny Brawne and both got engaged. Sadly their marriage never took place. Keats was suffering from tuberculosis and was advised by his doctor in 1821 to spend the winter in the warmer Italy. He never returned to England, dying in Rome in 1821 aged 25.

Keats House was opened to the public in 1925. The interior, in regency style, is still the same as it used to be while Keats lived there. Visitors can still see the original manuscripts and books in cabinets. Also on displa are Keats' love letters to Fanny, the engagement ring and a lock of her hair.

Visitors can also attend the literary events at Keats House that include poetry readings, talks on poetry, workshops and walks.

If you wish to stay in the neighborhood you may want to stay at the Thistle Euston, which is just a three minutes walk from the Euston Station.
