Guests experience historic elegance, quiet comfort, and a supremely convenient London while staying at this lovely mid-range boutique hotel. The Commodore Hotel is housed in a faithfully refurbished Victorian-era building. Its exquisitely decorated lounge area features beautiful antique appointments, and many of the rooms are also decorated to the romantic, sumptuous standards of the Victorian era, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings, and four-poster beds. The rooms include such modern amenities as mini-bars, televisions, and modem points for Internet connection. Guests can take advantage of the fitness studio to burn off some steam, and those who prefer to stay in can enjoy the hotel's in-house restaurant and bar. The Lancaster Gate restaurant offers limited room service and serves complimentary continental breakfast, as well as English and Mediterranean fare. Here, it is also possible to experience a traditional English high tea. The hotel's bar, the Red Room, named for its bright red walls, is a comfortable place to hang out with a favorite cocktail after a day of sightseeing -- which is extremely convenient from the hotel's central location.

Just across the tree-lined street is London's famous Hyde Park, where visitors can ride horses and row on the Serpentine. Tube stations are within close proximity, offering a very short, direct connection to many of London's top attractions, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the National Gallery. For the shopaholic, the fashionable Oxford Street and Bond Street are also close by, as is trendy Notting Hill and the famous Portobello Street flea market.

Generally good - only downsides were: the shower was tiny; our room that was a scramble up and down stairs from the lift, which was kind of quirky; our room was far too hot and the air-conditioning wasn't working. But the bed was huge and very comfy. We were told breakfast was included when we booked, told it was not when we checked in, and then when we came to pay after two nights, told that it was included so we didn't have to pay extra for it. All a bit odd but OK in the end.
