Situated on the South Bank of the Thames and joined to the North Bank by a special pedestrian bridge, Tate Modern was created in the year 2000 from a disused power station and has been superbly converted into the world's biggest and richest collection of modern art. Entry into the museum is free.
At the Tate Modern, visitors will find modern art from 1900 to present day including Dali, Picasso, Matisse and Warhol, plus fashionable works by Gilbert and George. On display is the largest collection of works by J.M.W. Turner in the world.
The breathtaking Turbine Hall, designed by Swiss architects Hertzog and de Meuron, creates a massive exhibition space. The place is air conditioned and if you are in the neighborhood and need to use a clean public restroom, just walk in. Visitors can have snacks at the cafe and enjoy the wonderful view over the river. This gallery gets more than one million visitors per month.
While you are in the area also try to see Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, St. Paul's Cathedral, London Dungeon, Cleopatras Needle and Museum of London.
