Design Museum

Opened in 1989, the Design Museum was the first in the world, devoted to the design of mass produced objects. The exhibition program includes three major shows a year and a number of smaller exhibitions that cover interiors, fashion, architecture, engineering, technology and graphics.

The first floor houses the main attraction of the museum, as it is the biggest space. Due to the comparitive small size of the museum, all the exhibitions change frequently. The mezzanine floor is primarily used for lectures on design and the designers.

Visitors will notice that the Collection and Review Galleries is thematic, focusing on mass production and concentrating on various products. It features everyday consumer items like tableware, office items, telephones, radio and television sets. The exhibition on contemporary design is located on the top floor. The museum also has online exhibits of new ideas and innovations in multimedia design.

While you are there, visit the museum's Blue Print Café, which boasts impressive views of the River Thames and Tower Bridge. Do not forget to check out the in-house shop, that has some very novel gift ideas. The shop has a nice selection of books and items of daily use, which have unique designs and handsome price tags.

Stay at the Southwark Rose Hotel, if you are looking for a hotel nearby. It is close to the attractive Oxford Street, famous for its shopping. Covent Garden is also closeby.
