The Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the British monarchy, and attracts tourists who love to see what the Royal living is like, making it a very popular London attraction. Even though Buckingham Palace is not an art gallery or a museum, visitors can see plenty of priceless works here.
The most attractive place in the Palace seems to be the 19 state rooms, which are only open to the public in August and September, while the Queen is on vacation. However, you can visit the rest of the palace yearound. Guests can walk through the lush state rooms festooned with some of the greatest Victorian style furnishings and rare regal collections like oil paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Poussin, as well as sculptures by Canova and Chantrey, antique porcelain and some of the best furniture in the world.
The highlight of any visit to Buckingham Palace is the Guard Changing Ceremony, which takes place at 11:30 a.m. every day between May and July. If you want to take photos, try to get there before 10:45 a.m., and try to stand at an appropriate place. If you want to try out that big black bearskin hat that the guards wear, visit the Guard's Museum nearby (down on Birdcage Walk). If you walk to the west front of the Palace, you will find The Queen's Gallery which is open to the public, and exhibits the private collections of the Queen.
Buckingham Palace Gardens are situated at the rear of the Palace. The gardens occupy a 42-acre (17-hectare) site in the City of Westminster. Visitors can gawk at the great 19th-century lake poised by flamingoes, the Waterloo Vase, and if they are lucky, a glimpse of the Queen's Swans.
Another great nearby greenspace is Green Park, which is just a few minutes walk from Buckingham Palace.
Visitors looking to stay nearby can check into The Ritz London located less than half a mile away. A more economical hotel nearby is Hesperia London Victoria.
