Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

The first Globe Theatre was built in Southwark in 1599. Most of William Shakespeare's post-1599 plays were originally staged at the Globe, including Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear and Hamlet. Unfortunately, the theatre was burnt down in 1613 when a cannon ball shot through the roof during a performance of Henry VIII

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is the interesting story of the re-creation of Shakespeare's beloved playhouse. Visitors can see the reconstructed Elizabethan theatre, built with materials and craftsmanship of 400 years ago. The summer season of plays sees Shakespeare performed in an authentic setting. Here visitors can watch a world class feat of a Shakespeare play in its original setting. Visitors can stand up sit on the wooden seats in the open-air theatre.

The Shakespeare Globe Centre is an educational, cultural and entertainment centre which includes a museum under the theatre, research facilities and an exhibition of Elizabethan London.

In 1996, Shakespeare's Globe was voted the best attraction in Europe. The Tate Modern, the Rose Theatre Site, the Anchor Pub, Southwark Cathedral, the Clink and the London Dungeon are just a short walk from the Globe.

If you wish to stay nearby, try staying at the Novotel London City South. It's stylish, brand new and just a short walk from the Tate Modern.
