The millennium-old Tower of London has protected, housed, imprisoned and been for many the last sight they saw on Earth. It has also housed lions, bears, and recently, flightless ravens.
There are 21 towers to the Tower of London. This historical place is located at the eastern boundary of the City of London's Financial District, adjacent to the River Thames and Tower Bridge. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Crown Jewels, which have been kept there since 1303, after they were stolen from Westminster Abbey. The highlight of the collection is the 530-carat Star of Africa. The pear shaped diamond is the second largest in the world and was extracted from a South African mine.
The Royal Armories are also an interesting stop at the Tower of London, where 40,000 pieces are on display. You will have to use a spiral staircase from the interior to get up there to see the display.
At the Tower, the Yeomen Warders (known as Beefeaters), act as tour guides, provide discreet security, and are something of a tourist attraction in their own right. Every evening, the warders perform the Ceremony of the Keys, and the Tower is secured for the night.
Other nearby attractions include the London Dungeon, the Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Museum of London.
Nice hotels in the area include Grange City Hotel and Chamberlain Hotel.
