Trafalgar Square

Designed by John Nash in the early 19th century, Trafalgar Square was built to honour Lord Nelson after his victory at the battle of Trafalgar and who was killed in the battle by Napoleon's army.

It is often the site of political demonstrations in London, due to the fact that it is close to the Prime Minister's official residence, 10 Downing Street, and is an intersection for many major streets. The square is a favorite with tourists due to the attractive and dignified surroundings. To the north of Trafalgar Square, you will find the National Gallery, which is rated as one of the world's best art museums. To the west, is Canada House, where visiting Canadians can get a taste of home. To the east, you will find the stone arches of South Africa House with African animals, which are worth a look.

Trafalgar Square is also popular for its yearly Christmas ceremony. However throughout the year, Trafalgar Square remains active hosting celebrations, political rallies and other public events. The square is also home to Nelson's Column, Admiralty Arch and fountains.

You may also want to visit St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Piccadilly Circus and London Eye which are conveniently located in the neighbourhood. If you get hungry, you can walk down to the Thames Foyer that serves high tea at The Savoy, A Fairmont Hotel, where a spectacular view of the Thames awaits you. You can walk down to the Light Bar or the American Bar, if you feel like relaxing with a drink.

Nearest nice hotels to the Trafalgar Square are the Royal Horseguards Thistle Hotel and The Ritz London.
