Westminster Abbey used to be a burial place for the kings and the queens. However, a few centuries ago, anyone who could afford it could buy themselves a grave site here. At the Abbey, you will be fascinated with the glorious mix of architectural styles of the cloisters (enclosures). The south walk provides good views of the amazingly intricate system of Gothic defenses which support the Abbey walls.
From the west Cloister, go to the Chapter House and check out the umbrella shape high above. While you are there don't miss out the Poet's Corner, where greats like Geoffrey Chaucer and Ben Johnson rest. Notice how Johnson's friends cut burial costs by burying him standing upright.
Next, go to the Crossing, which has magnificent floor tiling and is used for coronations. And while you are there visit the Museum, the Chapter House, the Abbey Shop, College Garden not forgetting St. Margaret's Church.
If you are still in the mood, walk down to the nearby attractions like the Houses of Parliament, Clock Tower, Victoria Tower Gardens and The Green Park. If all the walking makes you hungry, go to the nearest restaurant Quirinale. It has a nice selection of cuisine that you are sure to enjoy.
If you wish to stay somewhere near the Abbey, try the Royal Horseguards Thistle Hotel.
