Originally part of Hyde Park, the 111-hectares (275-acre) park has magnificent tree-lined avenues and beautiful flower beds. The park was once the private gardens of Kensington Palace but is now open for public enjoyment. The park is also well know was the setting for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), a prelude to the famous novel by J.M. Barrie Peter and Wendy. The association with the book is recognized with a statue of Peter Pan located on the grounds.
Facilities in Kensington Gardens include two children's playgrounds and toilets for the disabled. Deckchairs are available from April to September during daylight hours. Guided walks are also available.
The Serpentine Gallery has two playgrounds and children's entertainment during summer. The Diana, Princess of Wales' Memorial Playground, which honors the late Princess who lived in the adjacent palace, is a fantastic adventure for children, complete with teepees and a pirate ship.
Nearby accomodations include the Copthorne Tara Hotel London Kensington, which has charm and elegance, and is just one kilometer from Harrods.
