Trooping the Colour

Trooping the Colour is the common name for the Queen's/King's Birthday Parade. The current Queen's actual birthday is April 21. Monarchs don't always have birthdays in the best weather months, so as per tradition they have to have one in June. The Queen's birthday can fall on the first three Saturdays in June.

Visitors can see the Trooping the Colour in Horse Guard's Parade in Whitehall. The Queen receives the royal salute and inspects the troops, followed by a performance from the massed bands and the 'color' is trooped. The Queen then leads the troops to Buckingham Palace and appears on the balcony of the palace at 1 p.m. to watch the Royal Air Force fly past, accompanied by a gun salute at the Tower of London.

Members of the Royal family attend and if you get there early you can get a nice view of the troops along the route from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, via the Mall.
